The Benefits of Having a Positive View of Growing Older

October 05, 2022 by Casa Sandoval in Assisted Living

Social scientists say “aging gracefully” should not be just an expression but rather something people should take to heart as they enter their senior years. Maintaining a positive attitude as we age can help us better weather the many ups and downs we encounter along the journey.

A comprehensive study from the Yale School of Epidemiology and Public Health followed 660 seniors aged 50 years and older and found those who held a more positive view on growing older lived on average 7.5 years longer than those with a negative view. Researchers added negative views on old age may even make someone more susceptible to developing the brain changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease. However, they report if a person shifts to a more positive way of thinking, the adverse outcome may be mitigated.

Dr. Manfred Diehl, professor of human development and family studies at Colorado State University, advises people on how to develop a more positive approach to aging. His first recommendation is to be physically active at least 30 minutes each day. Then he says to keep your brain active and challenge it by continuing to learn new things. Other tips include: get enough sleep each night, stop smoking, avoid excessive alcohol, maintain a healthy weight and follow a healthy diet. Dr. Diehl says a healthy social life is important and to nurture a healthy relationship with your spouse, family and friends.

Another positive step is to get regular medical check-ups and screenings. Additionally, protect your mental health by taking the time to relax, unwind and to have fun.

The Transition to an Assisted Living Community

September 19, 2022 by Casa Sandoval in Assisted Living

No matter how old we are, change can be difficult and the bigger the change, the more challenging. For the elderly, change can signal an end to a way of life they are most familiar with and cause a range of emotions from mourning a loss of independence to feelings of helplessness. Hopefully it also offers a spark of excitement at starting a new adventure.

If you are an adult child of a senior who is in the process of transitioning into assisted living, experts offer tips to get through any rough patches. To make the move more successful, they recommended working as a team: the senior, the family, the new home and their doctor. As family members, it is important to recognize how intimidating the move can be in the eyes of your loved one as they are moving to a new environment with all new people. Experts say the adjustment period typically lasts for 30 to 90 days.

A senior can make it easier on themselves by keeping an open mind and realizing it will take a little while to adjust. Try to get out and enjoy your new environment rather than staying behind closed doors in your suite. If you are unsure how something works, ask questions. If you are having problems getting answers, talk to the management or ask your family to intervene.

Families can help the senior to set up their new apartment with familiar items and family memories including pictures and other favorite knick-knacks. Once they are settled, experts say don’t desert them but don’t overdo the visits. Allow them to find their own way and perhaps start making a few friends. If the community has family-friendly activities, join in when you can.

Along with independent living and memory care, Casa Sandoval in Hayward, CA offers private assisted living suites to those who need help with the activities of daily living. Finding the Best Senior Community for a Loved One

September 07, 2022 by Casa Sandoval in Senior Housing

Experts recommend that your first step before beginning the actual search for the “perfect” senior living community should be compiling answers to some important questions.  The first is to evaluate the level of care mom or dad needs, or if you are looking for yourself, be honest about the care you need to improve the quality of your life.

Also, look at your finances to determine your range of affordability.  Include pensions, annuities and other retirement income as well as social security.  An Elder law attorney can help you explore other options including your eligibility for Veterans benefits, long-term care insurance, real estate assets that can be sold or leveraged, life insurance, tax benefits, etc.

Once you have a good idea of your loved one’s situation, begin your search for senior living communities in your preferred location that meet the above criteria as well as offer onsite amenities and services desired.  If mom or dad no longer drives, does the community offer transportation to doctor appointments? Is a meal service included?  Is it important for you to have a fitness center, hair salon, theater, etc. onsite?  Do you need parking?  These are just a few of the questions to consider when looking for the perfect community.  Once you narrow down your options, give the communities a call to inquiry about availability, pricing, and to set up a tour.

At Casa Sandoval, you will find our beautiful all-inclusive home in Hayward, CA has it all including independent living, assisted living, memory care, companion living, and respite care.  Our community allows seniors to comfortably age in place with an array of resort-style amenities, care services, wellness programs and activities. Our East Bay location offers scenic views, and is close to shopping, medical facilities, and other services.  Please contact us or visit our website to learn more.

Make Retirement a New Adventure

August 12, 2022 by Casa Sandoval in Assisted Living

As statistics indicate more and more seniors are living well into their mid-80s and beyond, it is all the more reason to continue to play, learn, contribute, create and relax. For many older adults, retirement is the start of new adventures and a new lifestyle.

Rather than spending your last years lonely and socially isolated, today’s generation of seniors enjoy opportunities not available to their parents. Many are healthier and more active than earlier generations; and experts weigh-in on all of the choices seniors have to make retirement years transformative.

One of those suggestions is to volunteer. If you haven’t done so before, consider the causes you are passionate about and ask yourself what you can do to help. Do you want to make a difference in the environment, get involved in local politics or your church, or help people in your community in need? These are just a few suggestions of the many programs and opportunities to feel useful.

Other ways you can grow is to take a class in something you have always longed to do or to do better. If you are interested in sharpening your brain, there is much research indicating learning new things is good for us. Some examples include learning to play an instrument or speaking a foreign language. If you want to learn to cook, draw or write, take a class. Many of these things can be done online or through podcasts and audible books.

Museums and other organizations host virtual events featuring lecturers and renowned authors, orchestra performances and exciting travel programs. Live events may have follow-up sessions to ask questions. Social clubs, recreational activities and sports clubs are other ways to stay connected to people. Retirement is a great time to try a new hobby, train for a marathon, or get a part-time job doing something you have always wanted to do.

At Casa Sandoval senior living community, we offer all the comforts of home with stylish apartments and graciously appointed common areas both inside and out. Our broad range of services and amenities include wellness programs and activities, restaurant-style dining, billiards lounge, fitness center, gardens, and more to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle. For exceptional assisted or independent living, Hayward, CA seniors are encouraged to consider Casa Sandoval, a destination for successful aging.

Take Care When Starting an Exercise Routine

August 10, 2022 by Casa Sandoval in Independent Living

Doctors caution everyone, especially seniors, to go slow when starting or getting back into an exercise routine; and before you begin, to consult with your healthcare provider. After all you want to get back into shape, and causing injury or harm to yourself, is certain to delay or prevent this progress.

Moreover, doctors reiterate that while individuals extremely out-of-shape will benefit the most from regular exercise, they are also more at risk for sudden heart problems resulting from such a workout. Dr. Martha Gulati, editor-in-chief of CardioSmart, the American College of Cardiology's patient education initiative, says it is important to "pace yourself, don't do too much too soon and make sure you give your body time to rest between workouts."

One way to exercise safely is to pay attention to your heart rate. If you notice it is not coming down as your intensity decreases while resting or is beating irregularly, you need to stop. Dr. Gulati warns chest pains are never normal nor is nausea, vomiting or extreme sweating and if you experience symptoms, call 911. In addition, neither dizziness nor extreme shortness of breath is normal but rather a signal to stop and consult with your doctor. Cramps may be a sign of dehydration or low potassium levels and should not be ignored. Care should also be taken in individuals with atrial fibrillation, which is an irregular heartbeat, and seek emergency medical attention if such an event occurs.

For exceptional assisted living, Hayward, CA seniors are encouraged to consider Casa Sandoval, the perfect community to comfortably and safely age in place. Designed to meet our residents’ every need, we have a range of wellness programs and activities to engage and support physical, intellectual, social and spiritual connections.  Please visit our website for more information on independent living.  While you are there, use our Virtual Assistant to inquire about availability and pricing or to request a tour to see firsthand our beautiful community.  We look forward to meeting you.

Driving Safety for Seniors

July 22, 2022 by Casa Sandoval in Independent Living

Older drivers can still be good, safe drivers, but there are some things to consider both for your safety and the safety of others.  The Mayo Clinic recommends that seniors stay as active as possible in their day-to-day life which helps to maintain overall strength, flexibility, and range of motion.  Drivers need to be able to turn and look over their shoulder and move their head with ease.  They must be able to keep a firm grip on the steering wheel and legs need to be strong enough to apply pressure to the gas pedal or brake.

A senior’s peripheral vision can decrease with age or from certain medications and other eye problems may cause drivers to have trouble seeing in the dark or experience blurred vision.  Hearing problems can interfere with detecting sounds of sirens from emergency vehicles or approaching cars.  Be vigilant about scheduling vision and hearing tests regularly as part of your wellness care and follow your doctor’s advice as to how often they should be done.  Many problems can be corrected if caught early enough.

Remember that certain medications can cause drowsiness so make sure you know the side effects of your prescription drugs and do not drive if you are feeling sleepy.  It may be a good idea to limit trips in the car to daylight hours and when the weather is good.  Keep in mind that a person’s reaction time slows with age as do their motor skills.  You may need to re-evaluate your driving every few months, especially if you find yourself having incidents of accidents that almost happened.

The MedicineNet website has some safe driving tips for seniors:

Planning before you leave:

  • Plan to drive on streets you know.

  • Limit your trips to places that are easy to get to and close to home.

  • Take routes that let you avoid risky spots like ramps and left turns.

  • Add extra time for travel if driving conditions are bad.

  • Don't drive when you are stressed or tired.

While you are driving:

  • Always wear your seat belt.

  • Stay off the cell phone.

  • Avoid distractions such as listening to the radio or having conversations.

  • Leave a big space, at least two car lengths, between your car and the one in front of you. If you are driving at higher speeds or if the weather is bad, leave even more space between you and the next car.

  • Make sure there is enough space behind you. (Hint: if someone follows you too closely, slow down so that the person will pass you.)

  • Use your rear window defroster to keep the back window clear at all times.

  • Always keep your headlights on.

For assisted living or independent living Hayward, CA seniors can count on, we encourage you to consider Casa Sandoval, the perfect home to comfortably and safely age in place.  Our broad range of services and amenities include all-day restaurant-style dining, scheduled transportation, fitness center, wellness programs and activities to promote a healthy lifestyle for residents. Keep Your Brain Fit with Good Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Mental Stimulation

July 18, 2022 by Casa Sandoval in Senior Housing

Research supports the importance of seniors staying physical fit as well as keeping their brains’ fit.  Harvard Health Publishing reports on research with mice and humans that show “brainy activities stimulate new connections between nerve cells and may even help the brain generate new cells, developing neurological ‘plasticity’ and building up a functional reserve that provides a hedge against future cell loss.”

Mentally stimulating activities such as trivia and memory games, puzzles, crosswords, board and card games can help maintain brain function.  Even if you don’t have a partner to play with, many of these types of games can be found on a computer or tablet.   Reading, taking courses, drawing, painting and experimenting with things that require manual dexterity are stimulating mental gymnastics.  Other great brain boosters include learning or engaging in creative activities like playing an instrument or dancing.

Board games, such as chess and checkers, require counting, strategy and decision-making. Memory games, scrabble and crosswords can help to improve recall and reduce those times when you cannot get the right word out.  Another added benefit to playing games with others is companionship.

Experts say physical activity is also necessary for good brain health as it increases the number of tiny blood vessels that bring oxygen-rich blood to the region of the brain responsible for thought.  It encourages the development of “new nerve cells and increases the connections between brain cells (synapses).”   Another positive side effect of exercise is it also improves your heart health by lowering cholesterol levels and blood pressure, improving blood sugar balance and reducing mental stress.  Brain health is also improved with good nutrition.   Diets rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, unsaturated oils (olive oil) and plant sources of proteins may help to prevent cognitive impairment and dementia.

If you are looking for exceptional assisted living or independent living, Hayward, CA’s Casa Sandoval may be your answer.  Our broad range of services and amenities include wellness programs and activities, Chef inspired nutritious meals, billiards lounge, fitness center, life enrichment room, and more to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle. Mom or Dad Not Doing Well Living on Their Own?

June 17, 2022 by Casa Sandoval in Independent Living

If you noticed a change in mom or dad or another loved one after a recent visit from out of town, you are not alone. Experts say when families spend time together after a prolonged separation many adult children realize their parents are not doing as well as they thought they were living on their own.

Some of the most obvious signs a parent is having problems caring for him or herself is an unintended loss of weight, change in grooming habits or signs of a fall. The ADLs or Activities of Daily Living are used by experts to evaluate the needs of a person and include personal care such as bathing, dressing and toileting as well as transferring (ability to get in and out of bed, continence and eating.

Other important signs a person is no longer doing well on their own and could benefit from some sort of assistance are based on what experts call the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs). These include things like paying bills, taking care of their home, preparing and cooking meals, being able to get out of the home, and socializing.

At senior living communities like Casa Sandoval, we offer both independent living and assisted living. Our assisted living is designed to provide the services residents need to maintain their independence with 24/7 care managers, medication management, access to licensed nurses and more. June is National Safety Month

June 13, 2022 by Casa Sandoval in Senior Housing

Seniors are especially vulnerable to falls, burns, and poisonings and many of these accidents happen in the home. This is why experts recommend using a safety checklist such as the one the CDC publishes, A Home Fall Prevention Checklist for Older Adults. It points out the problems and provides solutions.

In addition, experts say if you have balance problems, you may want to get a fall risk assessment from your healthcare provider. They can give you tips to help improve balance along with suggestions on how to protect yourself from falls. Recommendations include wearing non-slip footwear on smooth floors, and if you need a cane or walker to remain steady on your feet, use it rather than relying on holding on to furniture and walls.

Keep hallways and stairways free of clutter, make sure they are well-lit, and use the banister rail when going up or down the stairs. If you do have area rugs, tape the edges down so they do not create a trip-hazard or use ones with non-skid backing. It is important to get annual eye examinations to check for problems, and update glasses as needed.

Other suggestions include setting your water heater’s thermostat no higher than 120 degrees to prevent scalding yourself. Install grab bars in the bathtub and near the toilet and place a rubber mat in the bottom of the tub. Store medications safely and dispose of expired and unused medications. Install nightlights in the bedroom, bathroom and hallways.

At the Casa Sandoval senior living community, we offer residents comfort, security, built-in companionship, and predictable budgeting. Our beautiful home has 233 apartments for a selection of floor plans and a broad range of amenities and services to meet seniors’ needs including nutrient-rich, tasty meals. Our residents’ safety is important to us, and each suite is equipped with a handicap-accessible bathroom and emergency call system.
