Commonsense Tips to Help Prevent Falls

January 24, 2021 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that each year, one out of every five Americans aged 65 years and older has a fall that results in broken bones or a head injury.  However medical professionals say while it is important for seniors to take precautions to prevent falls as injuries can be serious, they also remind us that regardless of how old we are, it is beneficial for our overall health to keep moving.  Experts explain that failing to engage in “mild exercise on a regular basis results in reduced muscle strength, decreased bone mass, loss of balance and coordination, and reduced flexibility.”

They go on to say that despite commonly held beliefs, falls are not a normal part of aging and there are things you can do to help keep you on your feet and mitigate the risk of a fall.  Their first advice is to talk to your doctor about your risk and prevention.  Tell them if you have fallen and discuss your medications to see if side effects include dizziness or sleepiness that could contribute to falls.  Other issues that may increase your risk include poor eyesight and chronic diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and arthritis or numbness in the feet.  If you often feel dizzy or lightheaded upon standing or suddenly sitting up, ask if you might have postural hypotension, and find out how you can alleviate the symptoms.

Further tips to reduce your risk include having your eyes checked annually and updating your glasses when needed.  In addition talk to your doctor about the best footwear for inside the house as well as outside.  Check your home for trip hazards (the CDC has a list of tips) and install grab bars in the bathroom.  Finally ask your doctor about exercises to strengthen your leg muscles as well as balance-training exercises to improve balance.

Eating the Right Foods can Help Heal an Injury

January 15, 2021 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

While being side-lined due to an injury can be tough, experts offer some good suggestions on how our diet choices may help us get back on our feet as quick as possible.   They also say if you are not able to exercise right now, it is important to eat the types of foods that will help the body heal, and not just empty calories that may increase body fat, muscle mass loss and inflammation.

The process of healing our bodies requires calories that are rich in leucine, which is an amino acid that “stimulates muscle protein synthesis.”  Foods such as dairy, beef, poultry, pork, fish, eggs, tofu and beans are a good source of leucine and many also provide other needed minerals and vitamins including calcium, nitrates, and vitamin C.  Moreover we do need a variety of vitamins to help us heal so include plenty of fresh fruit and veggies to your diet.  As alcohol consumption can slow down wound healing, it is a good idea to limit the amount you drink.

If you are dealing with a broken bone, controlling inflammation can help to control the pain and certain foods are more effective in doing that.  One good example is tart cherry juice, which contains plant chemicals called anthocyanins that can reduce inflammation.  Other good choices include berries, beets, turmeric and cold water fish.  Ginger and saffron are also known as analgesic (pain reducing) and as anti-inflammatory and can be added to a variety of dishes.

At MorningStar’s Casa Sandoval, our meal service is first-class and includes using a lot of ingredients that not only enhance the flavor of our meals but makes sure they are healthy.  Please visit our website to learn more about the top senior living Hayward offers.  With 233 suites designed for either independent living or assisted living, we are sure to have a one that suits your needs.

Your Anger may be Affecting Your Health

January 10, 2021 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

Studies show that anger can be as bad for a senior’s health.  While we all suffer from bouts of anger, unfortunately some people struggle with the emotion all too frequently to their detriment.  Doctors have known since the 1950’s that chronic anger, tension, and irritability can take a toll on our cardiovascular health but current research shows it may be even more damaging to the elderly.

According to a recent preliminary study published in the journal of Psychology and Aging, researchers report that “anger in people 80 and older is associated with higher levels of inflammation and chronic illness.” They add that while inflammation can be useful to fight infection or injury, “too much of it is associated with health problems, including heart disease and dementia.”

The study consisted of 200 participants between the ages of 59 to 93 who had blood samples drawn, which were tested for biomarkers of inflammation.  For subjects in the 80+ range, researchers found that regular bouts of anger suggested a significant link to deteriorating health than did even expressing feelings of sadness.  However they did not find a similar response in participants in their 60s and 70s.

As a preliminary study, other medical professionals say we probably need more research, but all agree that it is never too late to learn how to more effectively manage anger.  One suggestion is to practice mindfulness.  When we actively pay attention to our body’s response to hostility, it gives us time to pause and think about our reaction.  Another technique includes taking a walk or engaging in some type of exercise as it can help to bring our temper down.  Learning to use constructive communication techniques for problem-solving is also helpful.  If your anger problem is not getting any better, you may want to think about therapy; or talk to your doctor about whether antidepressants may help.

At MorningStar’s Casa Sandoval, we proudly offer senior living in the Hayward area that is not only affordable but offers a lifestyle of comfort, wellbeing and security.  Our 233 bright suites come in a range of floor plans, and we are pet friendly.  Please visit our website for pricing and availability.

Downsizing to a Smaller Place can be Liberating!

January 05, 2021 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

Instead of feeling sad about moving from a home that perhaps is too large or costly for you to care for, think about moving into a smaller apartment or condo as the start of a new adventure.   However, to do it right, you should be organized.  Experts suggest you only take with you the things that bring joy and find ways to get rid of the rest.  If that piece of advice still finds you with way too much stuff, then take a moment to picture how you want your new life to look.  Is it a sleek, minimalist décor or more like a smaller, compact version of your present home?

Some simple solutions to help you decorate your new apartment include bringing with you or buying multi-purpose furniture.  This could include upholstered storage benches or cubes, nesting coffee tables, extension desks, and sized-down sofa and chairs more suited to a compact footprint.  Attractive baskets and storage carts also help to make a small place feel more organized.

If you want to use some of your current furniture, measure it, and then draw up a floor plan of the new place and lay it all out to see how it will fit.  In addition since your new place is smaller, it will most likely not have as many closets as your old home so go through your clothing and only take the items you truly enjoy wearing.  Give the rest to charity.  Lastly consider the amenities at your new place.  For example if they have an onsite fitness room, you probably do not need to bring along your own in-home treadmill or stationary bike.

At MorningStar’s Casa Sandoval, our beautiful independent living and assisted living community offers 233 bright suites that are ready to move into and just require your furnishings and personal items.  Apartments come in a range of configurations including studio and alcove to one- or two-bedroom floorplans.  In addition residents enjoy stress-free living that includes no longing having to deal with maintenance problems inside or out.  Casa Sandoval offers the perfect solution - peace of mind, affordability, comfort, and opportunities for new friends.

New Year, New Outlook!

December 31, 2020 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

While the New Year may traditionally be a time for resolutions, perhaps 2012 may be a good time for resetting our priorities and attitudes toward life.  Experts suggest putting together a list of a few doable, realistic goals that can be undertaken in small steps throughout the year.

One of those goals can be to continue to keep in contact with our family and friends as we have done during the pandemic.  Something as simple as mailing a greeting card or sending a small token of your appreciation can go a long way to brightening someone’s day.

Another thing we can do in 2021 is to commit to trying something new each month.  Whether it is experimenting with new recipes and ingredients or picking up some art supplies and taking a beginner’s art class, it is sure to help us feel invigorated.  Along those same lines, if you are a reader, try something completely different from your unusual fare.

If you are a person of faith, you could devote the New Year to particular themes using Bible verses or words from any inspirational book for guidance.  For instance, if you wish to focus on peace, the Bible has hundreds of verses to contemplate that contain those concepts.

Others goals for 2021 could include anything from getting out of debt, supporting local businesses, or taking a walk every day.  For some, it may be the right time to express your feelings by starting a gratitude journal, or to declutter your home and finally organize the items you do intend to keep.

At MorningStar’s Casa Sandoval, we offer the finest independent living and assisted living in Hayward.  Not only do we provide a full range of services and amenities but we are one of the more affordable options in the area.  Please visit our website to learn more about our community and all we are doing to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our residents during COVID-19.  Our entire team is engaged in finding ways to build a true family, one loving relationship at a time!

Americans Continue to Show their Generosity of Spirit!

December 26, 2020 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

In spite of the fact that 2020 has been a difficult year, many Americans have stepped up with generous, charitable donations as well as acts of kindness.  Moreover even if your gesture was small, it probably made a big impact on those who were the recipients.

A nonprofit organization founded by Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg that promotes resiliency called Options B joined up with Survey Monkey to learn how giving people were this year, which has been hard on many financially and/or emotionally.  The “#OptionBThere” for the holidays initiative found that almost half of all Americans expect this holiday season to be harder than usual. However their research also shows that “we’re giving and receiving more meaningful support than we have in past years—and many people say the simplest acts of care are the ones that help the most.”

The survey results found that:

  • 90 percent of participants said they supported others by doing things like texting, calling, sending a care package, helping with errands or chores, or simply acknowledging someone's struggles and validating their feelings.

  • 62 percent said they gave more of this type of support to others than they had in previous years.

  • 80 percent said they received support from someone this year—and many said the kindness came from people they hadn't expected.

#OptionBThere found that a more thoughtful way to extend holiday greetings was to say something like you are thinking of the person rather than the traditional happy holidays.  Also instead of asking if you can do something, just rake their leaves or shovel their snow. Other ideas include giving to a charity you know they care about or putting together a care package for them or for someone they are worried about.   Best of all be sure to make plans for next year when we will be able to once again gather together.

Wondering if You can Afford Assisted Living?

December 15, 2020 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

At the MorningStar Casa Sandoval senior living community, we want you to know that we do our best to help make assisted living affordable to potential residents.  In fact once you reach out to us, our knowledgeable team will be resourceful on your behalf in as many facets of senior life as possible including your ability to pay for the care you need.

To start with, consider the fact that you most likely have numerous financial resources available to you beyond your retirement savings and investments.  Moreover as we want to make sure you get the best expert advice, we have partnered with Elderlife Financial Services, a company with over 20 years of experience helping thousands of families transition loved ones into senior living.  For a free financial consultation, we have their contact information on our website, or just ask and we will be happy to give it to you.

Here are a few examples of resources that may be available to help you pay for assisted living.  Depending on the policy, long-term care insurance can help pay for a variety of services in senior communities, and can offer care options often not covered through federal subsidies of Medicare and Medicaid (see below section).  Another source of untapped funding could be from whole life and universal life insurance policies.  However as there can be tax consequences, it may be in your best interest to consult Elderlife Financial Services for their advice.  Other sources of income could include the sale of your home, a reverse mortgage, or a bridge loan.

We encourage you to reach out to us to inquire about MorningStar Casa Sandoval’s availability and pricing.   We think you will be pleased to find we offer one of the best deals for independent living and assisted living in Hayward.  Our location is both convenient to medical facilities and shopping as well as offers scenic views of the Bay, Hayward Hills and the San Francisco skyline.

Making the Best of Living with a Long-term Illness

December 13, 2020 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

Whenever we suffer from a bout of the flu or another illness for a couple of weeks, we quickly remember that good health is a blessing.  So consider how tough it is for some people forced to deal with the consequences of long-term medical conditions that impact their lives every day.  Many of these debilitating, persistent conditions cause pain, fatigue and other life-altering symptoms.

Experts recommend if you are one of these people that you give yourself what you need whether it is food, sleep or down time and get into the habit of listening to your body and honoring its limitations.  The MedlinePlus website explains it is important to support yourself as well as to let go of expectations, and if you need more support, know where to go to get it.  Also learn as much as you can about your condition as people typically cope better once they know how to take care of themselves.

In addition they say let go of blame.  Your medical condition may be a result of your family history or just something that happened.  Another thing experts want people to know is over time, they will adapt; and that “you will feel like yourself again as you learn how to fit your illness into your life.”  If you are dealing with anxiety, try taking a walk, reading a book, or watching a movie.  Other coping mechanisms include yoga, tai chi, or mediation as well as learning to play an instrument or taking an art class.  Moreover don’t neglect family and friends, give them a call to see how they are doing.

MorningStar’s Casa Sandoval offers affordable senior living to Hayward area seniors and provides a lifestyle of comfort, wellbeing and security.  With 233 bright suites in a variety of floor plans from studio to alcove and one- and two-bedroom configurations, we welcome those looking for independent living and assisted living.  Visit our website for pricing and availability and to learn more about our community.

Walking is One of the Best Exercises for Seniors

December 10, 2020 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

A recent study from the Lifestyle Interventions and Independence for Elders (LIFE) trial concluded that if you want to remain mobile and healthy in old age, you should start walking.  Furthermore it says even if you are already well into old age, it is not too late to reap the benefits.

The 2 ½ year trial included more than 1,600 men and women between the ages of 70 and 89, of whom none had exercised regularly; and all were relatively frail.  The study authors say half of the participants took part in a daily exercise plan that included walking in addition to strength and balance exercises.  The other half of the group did some gentle stretching routines and took part in healthy aging educational workshops.

Researchers found that those who were assigned to the exercise group were “28% less likely to have become disabled (defined by the inability to walk about 400 yards without help) compared to those in the education group. They were also 18% less likely to have had any episode of physical disability.”  The study’s authors believe the results would be even more marked if those in the “healthy aging workshops” had not discovered the benefits of exercising on their own.

Another thing to encourage seniors to exercise is experts consider the ability to walk on one’s own without assistance the key to their independence.  Walking is easy to do and does not require special equipment other than a pair of good walking shoes.  If you are a senior who wants to start exercising, medical professionals say consult your healthcare provider, and slowly and gradually work your way toward longer distances.

For more information on the finest senior living Hayward offers, visit the MorningStar Casa Sandoval’s website.  Here we have direct links for pricing and availability as well as floor plans, a list of amenities and services, and information on MorningStar’s commitment to providing seniors affordable, trusted independent living and assisted living.

Assisted Living - Hayward's First Choice

December 07, 2020 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

If you have been relying on a piecemeal approach to care for your elderly parent’s various needs, you may want to consider moving them into an assisted living community.  Especially now during the pandemic, having a series of people coming into their home on a daily basis may not make good sense.  Another thing many are not aware of is that assisted living can be more affordable than in-home care services.  Experts say if you are paying for more than 40 hours of weekly care, all told, assisted living is probably less expensive.

Moreover the peace of mind you get knowing trained care managers are always available to help navigate changes in your loved one’s health, is priceless.  At MorningStar Casa Sandoval, we provide both independent living and assisted living Hayward seniors know they can count on for comfort, wellbeing and security.

As an assisted living resident, your parent will have an individualized care plan created just for them after an extensive interview process with our Wellness Director.  It includes an assessment of their current health as well as a full review of their medical history. Additionally we routinely re-evaluate the needs of our residents and update care plans as needed.  Monthly costs are based on the level of care (we have five levels), along with various auxiliary services, both medical and non-medical, that are priced a la carte.

MorningStar Casa Sandoval is committed to serving seniors and ensuring they are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.  We invite you to take a look at our website to learn more about our amenities, our services, and our company’s philosophy to care.  We continue to work tirelessly to stay abreast of the health care crisis and to mitigate the rippling societal effects of the lockdown through innovation and adoption of new practices.  One of those practices includes the use of Electrostatic Disinfectant technology that is perfectly safe for humans but deadly against infectious diseases.

Always Wanted to Learn to Play a Musical Instrument?

December 04, 2020 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

As many of us, especially seniors, are staying close to home and avoiding crowds this winter, it looks like we will have plenty of time on our hands.  Rather than feeling sad about it, we should take advantage of the time and try to do something we have always wanted to do like learn to play a musical instrument, or pick up from where we left off as kids.  After all we will have plenty of time to practice, and as research shows, exercising our brains are important to staying sharp.  The Cognitive Vitality website reports on several recent studies that suggest music may enhance cognitive function and promote healthy aging.  Researchers believe that musical training may increase the resiliency of the brain.

Further proof of the benefits comes from a study out of the University of South Florida, Tampa that also found it is never too late to reap the rewards.  Participants included adults 60 to 85 years of age with no previous musical experience.  Divided into two groups, one took individual piano lessons and the other group did not.  Researchers found those who receive lessons had “more robust gains in memory, verbal fluency, processing speed and other cognitive functions, compared with those who had not received lessons.”

Seniors who are picking up instruments they played as children or starting out as beginners, say not only is it enjoyable but helps lower their stress.  Moreover while studies suggest that active musical practice may provide the greatest level of neuroprotection, there is also evidence to suggest simply listening to music is beneficial to cognitive function and aging.

At the MorningStar Casa Sandoval, we proudly offer senior living Hayward area families trust.  Our community has independent living and assisted living that is both affordable and accommodating.  We have 233 private suites with a wide selection of floor plans (more than 40 different configurations) including studio, alcove and one and two-bedroom apartments.  Casa Sandoval is managed by the MorningStar Senior Living Company, which has a reputation throughout the Western US for providing senior housing with heart!  In addition we remain confident in our COVID-19 protocols for keeping all those beneath our roof safe.

With the Holidays Coming, Help Make it Special for a Senior Loved One

November 15, 2020 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

Let’s face it, 2020 has been a tough year and many of us are hoping to usher in a better New Year.  However before we get to 2021, we will celebrate the holidays and try to make it special for our loved ones including older members of our family.  We know the coronavirus has been tough on seniors of whom many have been fairly isolated from family and friends.

So how can we help to make the coming holidays feel special to them despite the pandemic?  The Internet has some great gift ideas that range from the practical to the luxurious and priced for those on a budget or someone looking to splurge.  To navigate through the numerous suggestions, keep in mind your loved one’s lifestyle, and whether they have mobility or physical ailments that could use a little ingenuity to make life easier.

One practical gift idea that is not too expensive is a sound bar for mom or dad’s TV.  It is not just their imagination that their fancy new TV is harder to clearly understand the dialogue.  While manufacturers have put lots of technology into creating magnificent picture screens, it has left many models with very small speakers.  A sound bar helps to pick up the voices on the TV, and some even feature adaptive hearing aid technology so mom or dad do not have to blast the volume to understand what is being said.

How about giving mom or dad a heated throw if they are always cold; or if they have lots of aches and pains, how about a weighted blanket?  If a loved one lives alone and not up to caring for a live pet, how about getting them a robotic one?  There are several models designed to appeal to both dog or cat lovers and are equipped with technology that allows the “pet” to respond to voice and touch.

Other practical gift ideas include a lap desk, grip and grab tool, long handled shoe horn, magnifying LED light or mirror, or a wireless key and wallet locator.  For comfort, how about a neck and back massage cushion or a new memory foam mattress?  Whatever you decide on, remember to keep the video calls coming or to safely visit.

MorningStar’s Casa Sandoval unique mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options.  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and hiring staff with a felt calling to serve.  We are set in a warm, loving environment with exceptional architecture and resort-style amenities.  Please visit our website to learn more about trusted senior living in Hayward.

The Importance of Socialization for Older Adults

As we age, socializing opportunities often start to diminish.  Many seniors no longer go into an office daily; while others start to feel uncomfortable driving especially at night, have mobility issues or physical ailments, experienced the recent loss of a spouse, and other factors that limit their ability to socialize.  Now add in the fact that many seniors are refraining from joining family activities due to COVID-19, it can be a lonely time for many older adults.

Lack of socialization in the elderly has many downsides.  Seniors who say they feel isolated and lonely have been found to have higher rates of depression, more anxiety, lower sense of self-esteem, and shorter life-spans.  Conversely older adults with a more robust social network appear to benefit from better physical, mental and cognitive health.  Studies show socially active seniors handle stress better, which in turn leads to better cardio health and improved immune systems.

While some independent living and assisted living communities may not be as open to the public as they were before the start of the pandemic; nonetheless community living provides peace of mind to residents knowing someone is always around.  At the MorningStar Senior Living communities, we adhered to the various states’ guidelines in which a particular community is located to keep residents as safe as possible.

At MorningStar’s Casa Sandoval, we proudly announce we are “OPEN to LIFE WHATEVER the SEASON” and that “COVID-19 HAD NO POWER TO CANCEL LOVE!”  And we practice that philosophy every day.  In fact many of the activities we offer are intended to give residents a chance to relax and just have some fun.  With 233 bright suites for independent living and assisted living, Hayward’s MorningStar apartments are true homes that offer residents privacy, comfort, and ease.  Please see our website to learn all about our community.

Suffering from Digital Eye Strain?

October 31, 2020 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

Many of us use electronic devices to read our daily newspaper, connect with family and friends through emails and social media, and watch TV as well as use a computer for work.  This means our eyes spend a lot of time each day staring into the bright lights of a digital screen, which has resulted in many people reporting eye strain.

The American Optometric Association says our “eyes are under greater strain when we view screens versus when we read printed words on a page.”  This is because screen print is not as sharply defined as printed letters and makes our eyes work harder in addition to the strain of the glare and reflection.  In fact in a study, researchers found that people blink less on digital screens, which might account for dry eyes and irritation.

Symptoms of computer eyes include dry, irritated, or burning eyes; blurred vision when viewing a screen or looking into the distance; and difficulty refocusing the eye.  People also report frequent headaches, neck and shoulder pain and sensitivity to light.

To counteract the problem, the American Optometric Association recommends following the 20-20-20 rule. This means for every 20 minutes spent looking at a digital screen; you look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.  Another helpful exercise is to change your focus by holding your finger a few inches from one eye and focusing your gaze on the finger.  Now slowly move it aside and focus on something farther away.  Alternate between looking at your finger and then looking farther away three times bringing the finger closer to the face each time.

Doctors recommend getting a full eye exam if symptoms persist as well as remembering to follow the American Optometric Association’s guidelines regarding yearly checkups.  This is important as eye strain can also be a sign of needing glasses or other underlying conditions.

Tips on How to Celebrate the Upcoming Holidays Virtually

October 25, 2020 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

While we know the holidays are fast approaching, we also understand we are in the middle of a pandemic.  This has left many of us asking how we make the holidays feel special while practicing safe social distancing with family members not part of our quarantine group.

Currently health experts stress large family gatherings are not advisable as the growth in COVID-19 cases often is traced back to younger people first getting it and then spreading it to older relatives who are more at risk for serious complications.  However despite the sadness we feel by not having our usual huge Thanksgiving gathering or Christmas parties, there are still ways we can bond with family and friends and have fun doing it.

To successfully do a group Zoom or FaceTime call with several branches of the family, assign one person to set the call up, coordinating time, etc. with all parties.  For Thanksgiving, you could organize a call during dinner and encourage everyone to share a special family story or give a reason why they are grateful.   If you are a family of singers, organize a virtual group sing.  If your family loves to cook, prepare a virtual meal together.

To make sure the kids feel part of the celebrations, have them dress-up or use puppets to perform the first Thanksgiving or Christmas story virtually.  This also has the advantage of keeping them busy several days before the holiday preparing.  Another idea is to watch the grandkids making holiday cookies or to send them a care package with a craft that you can make with them together.  In other words, use your imagination and remember someday soon we will again be celebrating together.

The CDC suggests before you plan any in-person events to check with the positivity rate in your community.  In addition remember to follow your state’s health and safety laws, rules, and regulations regarding group gatherings.

Urban Living Offers a Vibrant Lifestyle for Seniors

October 15, 2020 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

Real estate agents and other trend spotters say they have noticed seniors opting to move from the suburbs into the city.  Interior designer, Shirley Maddalen, tells her clients that if they want to shake up their lives, they need a new window to look out, and I guess cityscapes are definitely a new view.  Another sign of the trend comes from the property management software service, TenantCloud that reports nearly one-third of all urban applications were for renters over age 60.

Seniors themselves are quick to point out some of the advantages city living offers.  Sidewalks for one thing explain a senior who made the move from a sprawling suburb into the city where she can now walk to the local market and coffee shop.  Others cite the closeness of doctors and medical facilities as well as restaurants, entertainment venues, and public transportation.  In addition, retirees and empty nesters no longer have an obligation to live somewhere that is kid friendly.

City life can also boast scenic views as we well know at MorningStar’s Casa Sandoval senior living community in the heart of Hayward, CA.  Offering independent living and assisted living, our prime location in the East Bay region is just 25 miles south of San Francisco and gives residents spectacular views of the Bay, the San Francisco skyline, and Hayward Hills.  In addition we are right next door to the beautiful Hayward Japanese Gardens, a 3+ acre botanical garden featuring a teahouse and koi pond as well as to nearby shopping, banking, medical facilities, restaurants and more.

Will Living Through a Pandemic Change the Way We Express Ourselves?

October 01, 2020 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

Over the years, Americans have adopted a set of manners and etiquette that guides our society.   Before COVID, people greeted one another with a handshake, a kiss on the check, or by sharing a warm hug.  We routinely clinked glasses for a heartfelt toast or had grandma and our one-year old do their best to blow out candles on their cake. Now with a contagious disease among us, many of these polite and/or loving gestures have been put on hold to help keep our family and friends safe.

However etiquette consultant Jodi Smith explains we should not worry too much about these symbols as, "etiquette is always evolving, it's never set in stone.”  She adds, “What's set in stone is the idea of respect for myself and respect for others.”  Remember there are other ways to safely express ourselves and some may stay with us long after the coronavirus is gone.

In terms of handshakes, it probably bears repeating that not everyone in the world uses the handshake as a greeting.  Many cultures find it impolite and instead clasp their hands together over their heart and give a respectful nod to the person.  Etiquette experts say that is one good substitute for a handshake as it is simply stopping before the person, putting your hands behind your back and nodding an acknowledgement.

As much of the country is being encouraged to wear masks to help stop the spread of the coronavirus, we are also seeing more and more brightly colored, decorated masks that match a person’s outfit or indicate their support for a certain team, college affiliation, and more.  Someone’s mask may express their political leanings, artistic preferences or wearing a Star Wars mask as my grandson proudly does in support of his favorite heroes.   This isn’t new as throughout history, disease has influenced social norms as in the 1800s when gloves were worn not only to symbolize social status but to help protect against contagious diseases like typhoid fever and smallpox.

At MorningStar’s Casa Sandoval, you will discover the best independent living and assisted living Hayward, CA offers.  Our community is designed to enhance the lives of our residents and provide a home where seniors can safely, and comfortably age in place.  Our aggressive COVID response includes rigorous protocols and procedures in our fight to protect.  Visit our website to learn more.

Eating the Right Foods Can Help Us to Age Better

September 25, 2020 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

Research shows a diet rich in certain foods may help keep us healthier and delay or reduce the risk of some common diseases as we grow older.  On the top of that list is to add more fiber to our diet.  Experts say fiber helps reduce our risk for heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, as well as constipation, which becomes more common as we age.  The recommended amount of fiber to consume each day is around 30 grams for men 50 years and older and 21 grams for women.  Fiber-rich foods include beans, fruits, vegetables, oatmeal and nuts.

Whole grains such as whole wheat bread, quinoa, and wheat berries are also high in fiber and an important source of vitamin B-6 and folate that helps to keep our brains healthy.  Nuts are a good source of omega-6 and omega-3 polyunsaturated fat, magnesium and vitamin E and may help delay or prevent heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.  Walnuts, pistachios, pecans and almonds are among the healthiest nuts.

Eating fatty fish such as salmon, albacore tuna, and farmed trout, which is loaded with DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid is good brain food.  In fact studies have shown that low levels of DHA are linked to Alzheimer’s disease.  Another food group that can help us age better is dairy.  Doctors recommend low-fat or fat-free versions of milk, yogurt, or cheese to help keep your bones strong.  However if you do not tolerate dairy, products like soy and rice milk are enriched with calcium.  Other good foods to add in your diet are dark leafy greens; colorful red and orange produce that contain lycopene; cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower; sweet potatoes; and avocados.

A Place Where Residents Still Find Ways to Have Fun

September 15, 2020 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

One of the biggest benefits of independent living and assisted living communities is built-in companionship.  While obviously we are living in strange times with a historic world pandemic swirling around us, communities such as MorningStar’s Casa Sandoval in Hayward give seniors the security of knowing they are not alone.

In fact residents enjoy a host of amenities such as delicious, nutritional meals inspired by our Executive Chef that they no longer need to cook. They also appreciate leaving behind the hassle and expense of dealing with the upkeep of a home, as at Casa Sandoval, maintenance inside and out is someone else’s problem.  Other aspects of carefree living include relaxing patios and lounges on every floor, and beautiful outdoor strolling paths.  Also now under MorningStar’s management, Casa Sandoval is getting a full renovation from stem to stern.

Moreover we want you to know that despite the times, Casa Sandoval’s residents still know how to have fun.  One example was the recent pandemic parody based on Bastille Day.  The French national holiday, celebrated on July 14, marks the anniversary of the storming of a grand fortress infamous for holding political prisoners.  Our tongue-in-cheek version called “Storming of the Castle” consisted of Life Enrichment Coordinator, Lori presenting residents’ list of “demands” based on the Bill of Rights.

Some examples of “rights” included the right to assemble in small groups of 10 and the right to walk around the building with masks on.  There was also one referring to the right to see visitors through the looking glass as well as the right to sit in the sunshine on the patio.  You will be glad to know all rights were readily “granted.”  We encourage you to visit our website to see a pic of Lori in full costume and to read the remaining rights.

While you are there, take a look at the rest of our website to learn more about our community, which we think offers one of the best deals for independent living and assisted living in Hayward.  Our location is both convenient to medical facilities and shopping as well as offers scenic views of the Bay, Hayward Hills and the San Francisco skyline.

Please visit our website to learn more about unsurpassed senior living in Hayward.
