Your Diet Can Reduce Your Risk for Alzheimer's Disease

May 05, 2021 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

Several studies are showing links to our dietary habits and our risk for Alzheimer’s.  The Mayo Clinic reports that a hybrid of two diets, the DASH diet that helps reduce high blood pressure and the Mediterranean diet that improves heart health, may protect our brain health.

Known as the "MIND" diet, which is short for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay, the diet consists of lots of natural plant-based foods while limiting red meat, saturated fat and sugar.  Based on observational studies, research suggests that following the MIND diet can “reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease by up to 53 percent as well as slow cognitive decline and improve verbal memory.”

One category of food at the top of the list is green leafy vegetables with a recommendation of at least six servings a week in dishes such as salads.  The diet also includes one serving of other vegetables daily.  MIND’s primary fruit is to eat berries at least twice a week.  Red meat is reduced to less than four times a week, cheese to less than one serving per week, while poultry and fish consumed twice or once a week respectively.  Other recommended proteins include nuts and beans.

Oil should be mainly from olive oil and butter or margarine reduced to less than a tablespoon a day; and fried or fast food eaten less than once a week.  MIND includes a glass of wine a day but limits pastries and sweets to less than five times a week.   The Mayo Clinic says study results also found you do not have to strictly follow the diet to gain benefits.  For example, “adults in the study who followed the diet most closely (an average score of 9.6 points out of 15) saw the biggest drop in their Alzheimer's risk, the ones who scored in the middle (7.5 points) still cut their risk by over a third.”

Trying to Lose a Few Pounds?

April 12, 2021 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

In addition to the types of food we eat, dieticians say it is also important to pay attention to portion size when attempting to shed a few pounds as it will help us reach our goal.  When trying to diet, sticking to nutrient-dense, relatively low-calorie foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean meats and poultry are your best choices; but no matter how healthy a food is, you still should not overconsume.

This is where portion control plays a part.  Amy Gorin, a plant-based registered dietitian and owner of Plant-Based Eats, a collection of curated meal plans, grocery lists and nutrition tip sheets, explains that while foods like almond butter and dark chocolate are good for us, they should be eaten in moderation and in proper portions.  In other words, the bottom-line is a large chocolate bar should not be consumed in one sitting.

However to complicate matters, experts explain that in many cases, strictly following portion sizes suggested on the container would differ from what a registered dietician would recommend.  The problem with across-the-board portion sizes is they do not address age group, gender, and activity level of the particular person.  Add to that, portion size is a critical component to actually losing weight especially in foods that are higher in calories.

Also eating the right amount of food helps to maintain a balanced gut. The Harvard Health Men’s Watch, suggests “a healthy gut microbiome stimulates the body’s immune system and may shield against an array of chronic diseases, including: cancer, heart disease and Rheumatoid arthritis.”

If you are looking for exceptional senior living, Hayward CA’s Casa Sandoval may be your answer. We offer residents comfort, security, built-in companionship, and predictable budgeting.  Our beautiful home has 233 suites for independent living and assisted living in a selection of floor plans and a broad range of amenities and services to meet every need including a nutritional, delicious dining service.  Please see our website for more information.

About Half of Americans will have Cataracts by the Age of 75

April 04, 2021 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

The Mayo Clinic defines cataracts as a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye and explains it is like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window.  While they develop slowly and do not affect our vision much early-on, as the condition progresses, people find it is difficult to read and drive a car, especially at night.  Symptoms also include hazy or less colorful vision, sensitivity to light and glare, double vision in one eye, and the need for brighter lights for reading and other activities.

About half of Americans will have cataracts by the age of 75 but they can also be the result of an injury or certain genetic disorders.  In addition, diabetes, the long-term use of a steroid medication, or past eye surgery can cause cataracts to develop.

Doctors say when cataracts start interfering with your vision as the “clouding becomes denser and involves a bigger part of the lens, to the point your vision becomes blurred,” it is time to think about cataract surgery.  The good news is that the surgery is typically very safe and effective.

Cataracts and other eye problems are more common in seniors and is why the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends adults over the age of 65 get a complete eye exam every year or two.  During your exam, your ophthalmologist will check not only for cataracts but age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma as well as help to identify certain health conditions such as diabetes or stroke.  They also recommend wearing sunglasses to screen out the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) light rays or wear regular eyeglasses with a clear anti-UV coating to slow down the formation of cataracts.

Hobbies Can Be Beneficial to Your Wellbeing

March 15, 2021 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

Experts explain that many of the things we consider to be merely hobbies are not only relaxing but can also be beneficial to our wellbeing, and one example is knitting.  As a recent international survey found, knitting has a “measurable effect on calming anxiety and relieving stress.”  In fact, knitters reported feelings of happiness and calm while knitting as well as enjoy the social nature of the activity even though recent events mean it is currently an online community.

Another clinical study involving individuals with eating disorders found that knitting had a significant effect on decreasing their anxiety.  Participants reported a sense of calm along with a lessening of obsessive thoughts and preoccupations.

Researchers believe that just as playing the piano is good for our brains by having the movement of both our hands coordinate; knitting accomplishes much the same thing.  These bilateral (two-sided) movements fire neurons all over the brain, which in turn stimulates a whole host of brain functions that provide numerous benefits.  Through a series of studies, knitting appears to help those suffering from not only anxiety but eating disorders and pain management.  Knitting also offers the satisfaction of creating a warm hat, sweater, baby blanket, or a pair of socks for a loved one or someone in need.

If knitting isn’t your thing, experts say you may want to try journaling to cope with your anxiety.  When you put your feelings in writing, it may help you to gain control of your emotions and to create order in your world of chaos.  It is also a good way to prioritize concerns and problems.  To help you take advantage of random thoughts that come to you throughout the day, carry paper and pen so you can record your feelings while still fresh in your mind.

Some other easy-to-do stress-relievers include learning to cook or experimenting with different recipes.  Becoming serious about photography can also be a good excuse to get out in nature.  Doing word puzzles or coloring, swimming, yoga, and walking can also be beneficial.  Just remember that it might take a few tries to find the perfect hobby or activity for you, and it may be a combination of several, but most of all don’t give up.

Before & After Surgery - What You Can Do for a Speedy Recovery

March 10, 2021 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

Medical experts say there are things we can do before and after that may help encourage our recovery from surgery.  One of the first things says Dr. Charla Fischer, an orthopedic surgeon at NYU Langone Spine Center in New York City, is to think of surgery not as a sprint but rather as a full marathon or race.  She explains, "The surgery itself is just the first part of the race – there is also the recovery after. You want your body to be as prepared as possible, and exercise and good nutrition before and after surgery are part of this."

Before your surgery, your doctor may have you screened for a series of health problems including malnutrition, anemia, diabetes and pain, and then take steps to address them.  As exercise is another important part of getting in shape, you should talk to your surgeon about what is safe for you to do.  If you feel you need more guidance, ask if you are a candidate for a pre-habilitation program as it can show you the best type of exercise to safely strengthen your body in readiness for surgery.  Also be sure to ask about what kind of exercise is safe to do after the surgery.  Doctors say typically the quicker you are to move, the quicker you get your strength back.

If you find yourself suffering from preoperative anxiety, ask your surgeon to walk you through the experience so you know what to expect including “pre-surgery, during surgery, the hospital stay and recovery after surgery," Dr. Fisher explains.   Your post-surgery diet should be rich in protein, and avoid sugary and processed foods.  Also stay hydrated.  Quitting smoking is another thing that offers big benefits in post-surgical outcomes as “smoking increases the risk of blood clots, reduces the ability of blood to carry oxygen to the tissues that need it and increases stress on the heart.” Finally, if something doesn’t seem right about your recovery, contact your surgeon.

For unsurpassed senior living, Hayward seniors are encouraged to consider Casa Sandoval, a true destination for successful aging.  Along with independent and assisted living, we provide respite care in a furnished suite for up to 30 days.  Respite or temporary care is a great option for seniors who are recovering from surgery or an illness and require some day-to-day support services.  Contact us to learn more about our respite care and how they can help you or your loved one to make a speedy recovery.

Suffering from Arthritis? Experts Say Try Tai Chi!

February 13, 2021 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

Tai Chi is one of the best known martial arts as well as one of the oldest as it was developed around 1670.  It has been used throughout the centuries to help balance the body and mind and recently has gotten positive press for being a good arthritis workout.  In fact several years ago, a study from the Tufts Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, found that “tai chi could specifically reduce the pain and physical impairment of people with severe knee OA.”  In 2013, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended a “Tai Chi for Arthritis for Fall Prevention Program.”

The Scope, a blog produced by the Office of Communications at Stanford Medicine, published a study in 2018 declaring that tai chi can reduce the risk of falls.  The multi-institutional clinical trial “assessed the effectiveness of two proven exercise interventions — tai chi and a multimodal exercise program — which were compared to a control intervention of stretching.”

The study consisted of 670 participants ages 70 and older with a high risk for falls based on limited mobility or a history of falling the previous year.  Each was randomly assigned to take part in twice weekly, 60-minute exercise sessions for 24 weeks of tai chi balance training, multimodal exercises, or stretching.  Study results were based on monthly self-reporting from participants on incidences of falls, and then confirmed with follow-up appointments and medical records.  As reported in JAMA, the study found tai chi to be more effective in reducing falls during the six month period.  The data showed “152 falls occurred among 85 participants in the tai chi group, 218 falls among 112 participants in the multimodal exercise group and 363 falls among 127 participants in the stretching group.”

At MorningStar’s Casa Sandoval, we know that keeping moving and staying active is good for all of us regardless of age.  Along with resort-style amenities and services, we proudly offer a range of wellness programs that benefit the health and wellbeing of our residents.  Our gorgeous community has 233 bright suites in a range of floor plans that make it easy to get an apartment to meet your needs.  We also want new residents to know they will have priority access to the COVID-19 vaccine.

Start the New Year by Protecting Your Personal Info

February 09, 2021 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

Fraud continues to be a big problem and can happen through online purchases, phone calls, emails, and in-person scams.  Security experts explain that we can prevent a lot of the fraudulent activity directed at us by adopting some commonsense guidelines.  The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says to shut down fraudulent schemes: Block unwanted calls and text messages. Do not give out your personal or financial information in response to a request you didn't expect.  Resist the pressure to act immediately.

If you shop and log-on to other types of sites online, and if the company or organization offers it, take advantage of “dual-factor authentication.”  It is easy to do and means that once you enter your user name and password, you will be sent a unique code via text or email that must be entered before you can access your account.

Other suggestions to protect personal information include taking a look at your Facebook “Settings & Privacy Checkup”  The “easy-to-use wizard will guide you through settings that will enable you to lock your profile so that only your friends can see it — and scammers will be locked out.”  When you use an online retailer for the first time, before you buy, do a quick google search using the words “scam or fraud” to see if anything comes up.  Then take a look at their “About” page, contact info, address, phone number, etc. to see if they look legitimate.  Another suggestion is to copy the front and back of every document and credit card you carry in your wallet so you can quickly contact the businesses or organizations to report a lost or stolen card.

At MorningStar’s Casa Sandoval, our 55+ community offers a lifestyle of comfort, wellbeing and security.  Our 233 bright suites represent the finest independent living and assisted living Hayward offers and include a full range of amenities and services.  If you were wondering, we are pet friendly.  Visit our website for more information as well as pricing and availability.

CDC Says Even after Vaccination, We will Still Need a Mask for a While

February 03, 2021 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

Now that many seniors are receiving their COVID-19 vaccines, we are all getting impatient to get back to normal life.  However the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cautions that even after we receive our second dose of the vaccine, we still need to wear our face mask at least for a while.

To start with, it will take some time to build up our immunity to the virus as well as the fact that the vaccine is not 100 percent effective against COVID.  Pfizer-BioNTech reports that “protection doesn't start until 12 days after the first shot and that it reaches 52% effectiveness a few weeks later.”  Their studies have shown that around a week after you receive your second vaccination, the effectiveness rate is 95%.  With the Moderna vaccine, an individual is reported to have a “protection rate of 51% two weeks after the first immunization and 94% two weeks after the second dose.”

Another reason the CDC recommends continuing to mask up around people outside your “pod,” is that doctors do not know if vaccinated people who may still get a mild or asymptomatic case of COVID can spread the virus to others.  As more and more people get vaccinated, they hope to have more answers to those questions.  For now to protect yourself and others, wearing a mask when in groups, socially distancing at least 6 ft. apart, and frequently washing our hands, are all good advice to follow over the next several months as healthcare providers work to get more people vaccinated.

The MorningStar Casa Sandoval is conveniently located in Hayward, CA and offers area seniors the finest independent living and assisted living.   Our stylish apartments come in a range of floor plans including alcove; studio; 1-bedroom, 1-bath; 2-bedroom, 1-bath configurations.  Amenities include a full range of onsite attractions such as Executive Chef-inspired meals, restaurant-style dining, fitness center, garage parking, billiards lounge, card room, ice cream parlor and more.  Visit our website for additional information on the finest senior living Hayward offers.

January 29, 2021 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

At the MorningStar Casa Sandoval senior living community, our mission is to make each resident feel right at home by supporting a lifestyle of comfort, wellness, and security.  As we consider our residents to be “heroes,” just so we recognize team members to be the “heartbeat” of MorningStar.  We also know this is only accomplished by hiring people with big hearts who intrinsically understand that serving seniors is a privilege.  With a motto of “Service Becomes Us,” we back it up with a full day of culture training for all new employees regardless of their position; in our proprietary Radiance class that is more than a customer service program.  We then keep it going with daily reminders of our 12 Service Values.

Just listen to a MorningStar team member share what they have learned about working with seniors.   "Seniors teach me to love more, have compassion, appreciation, and respect. The shared memories of our seniors help us to understand life, stimulate our development, and help us to evaluate ourselves positively. Respecting the rights and dignity of our seniors is the first step in establishing a satisfactory relationship between them and us."

Along with the area’s finest independent living, we also offer compassionate assisted living that is intended to help seniors maintain their sense of independence by providing various levels of support for the activities of daily living (ADLs).  We create Individualized Care Plans for each resident after a thorough assessment with our Wellness Director, working in agreement with the senior and their extended family. All assisted living residents receive the services of around-the-clock Care Managers who work diligently to ensure your comfort and safety as they meet your expressed (and even unexpressed) needs.

At MorningStar Casa Sandoval, we invite area seniors to visit our website for more information regarding our community as well as to learn about pricing and availability.  We also want new residents to know that they will have priority access to the COVID-19 vaccine.

Commonsense Tips to Help Prevent Falls

January 24, 2021 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that each year, one out of every five Americans aged 65 years and older has a fall that results in broken bones or a head injury.  However medical professionals say while it is important for seniors to take precautions to prevent falls as injuries can be serious, they also remind us that regardless of how old we are, it is beneficial for our overall health to keep moving.  Experts explain that failing to engage in “mild exercise on a regular basis results in reduced muscle strength, decreased bone mass, loss of balance and coordination, and reduced flexibility.”

They go on to say that despite commonly held beliefs, falls are not a normal part of aging and there are things you can do to help keep you on your feet and mitigate the risk of a fall.  Their first advice is to talk to your doctor about your risk and prevention.  Tell them if you have fallen and discuss your medications to see if side effects include dizziness or sleepiness that could contribute to falls.  Other issues that may increase your risk include poor eyesight and chronic diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and arthritis or numbness in the feet.  If you often feel dizzy or lightheaded upon standing or suddenly sitting up, ask if you might have postural hypotension, and find out how you can alleviate the symptoms.

Further tips to reduce your risk include having your eyes checked annually and updating your glasses when needed.  In addition talk to your doctor about the best footwear for inside the house as well as outside.  Check your home for trip hazards (the CDC has a list of tips) and install grab bars in the bathroom.  Finally ask your doctor about exercises to strengthen your leg muscles as well as balance-training exercises to improve balance.

Eating the Right Foods can Help Heal an Injury

January 15, 2021 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

While being side-lined due to an injury can be tough, experts offer some good suggestions on how our diet choices may help us get back on our feet as quick as possible.   They also say if you are not able to exercise right now, it is important to eat the types of foods that will help the body heal, and not just empty calories that may increase body fat, muscle mass loss and inflammation.

The process of healing our bodies requires calories that are rich in leucine, which is an amino acid that “stimulates muscle protein synthesis.”  Foods such as dairy, beef, poultry, pork, fish, eggs, tofu and beans are a good source of leucine and many also provide other needed minerals and vitamins including calcium, nitrates, and vitamin C.  Moreover we do need a variety of vitamins to help us heal so include plenty of fresh fruit and veggies to your diet.  As alcohol consumption can slow down wound healing, it is a good idea to limit the amount you drink.

If you are dealing with a broken bone, controlling inflammation can help to control the pain and certain foods are more effective in doing that.  One good example is tart cherry juice, which contains plant chemicals called anthocyanins that can reduce inflammation.  Other good choices include berries, beets, turmeric and cold water fish.  Ginger and saffron are also known as analgesic (pain reducing) and as anti-inflammatory and can be added to a variety of dishes.

At MorningStar’s Casa Sandoval, our meal service is first-class and includes using a lot of ingredients that not only enhance the flavor of our meals but makes sure they are healthy.  Please visit our website to learn more about the top senior living Hayward offers.  With 233 suites designed for either independent living or assisted living, we are sure to have a one that suits your needs.

Your Anger may be Affecting Your Health

January 10, 2021 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

Studies show that anger can be as bad for a senior’s health.  While we all suffer from bouts of anger, unfortunately some people struggle with the emotion all too frequently to their detriment.  Doctors have known since the 1950’s that chronic anger, tension, and irritability can take a toll on our cardiovascular health but current research shows it may be even more damaging to the elderly.

According to a recent preliminary study published in the journal of Psychology and Aging, researchers report that “anger in people 80 and older is associated with higher levels of inflammation and chronic illness.” They add that while inflammation can be useful to fight infection or injury, “too much of it is associated with health problems, including heart disease and dementia.”

The study consisted of 200 participants between the ages of 59 to 93 who had blood samples drawn, which were tested for biomarkers of inflammation.  For subjects in the 80+ range, researchers found that regular bouts of anger suggested a significant link to deteriorating health than did even expressing feelings of sadness.  However they did not find a similar response in participants in their 60s and 70s.

As a preliminary study, other medical professionals say we probably need more research, but all agree that it is never too late to learn how to more effectively manage anger.  One suggestion is to practice mindfulness.  When we actively pay attention to our body’s response to hostility, it gives us time to pause and think about our reaction.  Another technique includes taking a walk or engaging in some type of exercise as it can help to bring our temper down.  Learning to use constructive communication techniques for problem-solving is also helpful.  If your anger problem is not getting any better, you may want to think about therapy; or talk to your doctor about whether antidepressants may help.

At MorningStar’s Casa Sandoval, we proudly offer senior living in the Hayward area that is not only affordable but offers a lifestyle of comfort, wellbeing and security.  Our 233 bright suites come in a range of floor plans, and we are pet friendly.  Please visit our website for pricing and availability.

Downsizing to a Smaller Place can be Liberating!

January 05, 2021 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

Instead of feeling sad about moving from a home that perhaps is too large or costly for you to care for, think about moving into a smaller apartment or condo as the start of a new adventure.   However, to do it right, you should be organized.  Experts suggest you only take with you the things that bring joy and find ways to get rid of the rest.  If that piece of advice still finds you with way too much stuff, then take a moment to picture how you want your new life to look.  Is it a sleek, minimalist décor or more like a smaller, compact version of your present home?

Some simple solutions to help you decorate your new apartment include bringing with you or buying multi-purpose furniture.  This could include upholstered storage benches or cubes, nesting coffee tables, extension desks, and sized-down sofa and chairs more suited to a compact footprint.  Attractive baskets and storage carts also help to make a small place feel more organized.

If you want to use some of your current furniture, measure it, and then draw up a floor plan of the new place and lay it all out to see how it will fit.  In addition since your new place is smaller, it will most likely not have as many closets as your old home so go through your clothing and only take the items you truly enjoy wearing.  Give the rest to charity.  Lastly consider the amenities at your new place.  For example if they have an onsite fitness room, you probably do not need to bring along your own in-home treadmill or stationary bike.

At MorningStar’s Casa Sandoval, our beautiful independent living and assisted living community offers 233 bright suites that are ready to move into and just require your furnishings and personal items.  Apartments come in a range of configurations including studio and alcove to one- or two-bedroom floorplans.  In addition residents enjoy stress-free living that includes no longing having to deal with maintenance problems inside or out.  Casa Sandoval offers the perfect solution - peace of mind, affordability, comfort, and opportunities for new friends.

New Year, New Outlook!

December 31, 2020 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

While the New Year may traditionally be a time for resolutions, perhaps 2012 may be a good time for resetting our priorities and attitudes toward life.  Experts suggest putting together a list of a few doable, realistic goals that can be undertaken in small steps throughout the year.

One of those goals can be to continue to keep in contact with our family and friends as we have done during the pandemic.  Something as simple as mailing a greeting card or sending a small token of your appreciation can go a long way to brightening someone’s day.

Another thing we can do in 2021 is to commit to trying something new each month.  Whether it is experimenting with new recipes and ingredients or picking up some art supplies and taking a beginner’s art class, it is sure to help us feel invigorated.  Along those same lines, if you are a reader, try something completely different from your unusual fare.

If you are a person of faith, you could devote the New Year to particular themes using Bible verses or words from any inspirational book for guidance.  For instance, if you wish to focus on peace, the Bible has hundreds of verses to contemplate that contain those concepts.

Others goals for 2021 could include anything from getting out of debt, supporting local businesses, or taking a walk every day.  For some, it may be the right time to express your feelings by starting a gratitude journal, or to declutter your home and finally organize the items you do intend to keep.

At MorningStar’s Casa Sandoval, we offer the finest independent living and assisted living in Hayward.  Not only do we provide a full range of services and amenities but we are one of the more affordable options in the area.  Please visit our website to learn more about our community and all we are doing to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our residents during COVID-19.  Our entire team is engaged in finding ways to build a true family, one loving relationship at a time!

Americans Continue to Show their Generosity of Spirit!

December 26, 2020 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

In spite of the fact that 2020 has been a difficult year, many Americans have stepped up with generous, charitable donations as well as acts of kindness.  Moreover even if your gesture was small, it probably made a big impact on those who were the recipients.

A nonprofit organization founded by Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg that promotes resiliency called Options B joined up with Survey Monkey to learn how giving people were this year, which has been hard on many financially and/or emotionally.  The “#OptionBThere” for the holidays initiative found that almost half of all Americans expect this holiday season to be harder than usual. However their research also shows that “we’re giving and receiving more meaningful support than we have in past years—and many people say the simplest acts of care are the ones that help the most.”

The survey results found that:

  • 90 percent of participants said they supported others by doing things like texting, calling, sending a care package, helping with errands or chores, or simply acknowledging someone's struggles and validating their feelings.

  • 62 percent said they gave more of this type of support to others than they had in previous years.

  • 80 percent said they received support from someone this year—and many said the kindness came from people they hadn't expected.

#OptionBThere found that a more thoughtful way to extend holiday greetings was to say something like you are thinking of the person rather than the traditional happy holidays.  Also instead of asking if you can do something, just rake their leaves or shovel their snow. Other ideas include giving to a charity you know they care about or putting together a care package for them or for someone they are worried about.   Best of all be sure to make plans for next year when we will be able to once again gather together.

Wondering if You can Afford Assisted Living?

December 15, 2020 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

At the MorningStar Casa Sandoval senior living community, we want you to know that we do our best to help make assisted living affordable to potential residents.  In fact once you reach out to us, our knowledgeable team will be resourceful on your behalf in as many facets of senior life as possible including your ability to pay for the care you need.

To start with, consider the fact that you most likely have numerous financial resources available to you beyond your retirement savings and investments.  Moreover as we want to make sure you get the best expert advice, we have partnered with Elderlife Financial Services, a company with over 20 years of experience helping thousands of families transition loved ones into senior living.  For a free financial consultation, we have their contact information on our website, or just ask and we will be happy to give it to you.

Here are a few examples of resources that may be available to help you pay for assisted living.  Depending on the policy, long-term care insurance can help pay for a variety of services in senior communities, and can offer care options often not covered through federal subsidies of Medicare and Medicaid (see below section).  Another source of untapped funding could be from whole life and universal life insurance policies.  However as there can be tax consequences, it may be in your best interest to consult Elderlife Financial Services for their advice.  Other sources of income could include the sale of your home, a reverse mortgage, or a bridge loan.

We encourage you to reach out to us to inquire about MorningStar Casa Sandoval’s availability and pricing.   We think you will be pleased to find we offer one of the best deals for independent living and assisted living in Hayward.  Our location is both convenient to medical facilities and shopping as well as offers scenic views of the Bay, Hayward Hills and the San Francisco skyline.

Making the Best of Living with a Long-term Illness

December 13, 2020 by Casa Sandoval in senior living

Whenever we suffer from a bout of the flu or another illness for a couple of weeks, we quickly remember that good health is a blessing.  So consider how tough it is for some people forced to deal with the consequences of long-term medical conditions that impact their lives every day.  Many of these debilitating, persistent conditions cause pain, fatigue and other life-altering symptoms.

Experts recommend if you are one of these people that you give yourself what you need whether it is food, sleep or down time and get into the habit of listening to your body and honoring its limitations.  The MedlinePlus website explains it is important to support yourself as well as to let go of expectations, and if you need more support, know where to go to get it.  Also learn as much as you can about your condition as people typically cope better once they know how to take care of themselves.

In addition they say let go of blame.  Your medical condition may be a result of your family history or just something that happened.  Another thing experts want people to know is over time, they will adapt; and that “you will feel like yourself again as you learn how to fit your illness into your life.”  If you are dealing with anxiety, try taking a walk, reading a book, or watching a movie.  Other coping mechanisms include yoga, tai chi, or mediation as well as learning to play an instrument or taking an art class.  Moreover don’t neglect family and friends, give them a call to see how they are doing.

MorningStar’s Casa Sandoval offers affordable senior living to Hayward area seniors and provides a lifestyle of comfort, wellbeing and security.  With 233 bright suites in a variety of floor plans from studio to alcove and one- and two-bedroom configurations, we welcome those looking for independent living and assisted living.  Visit our website for pricing and availability and to learn more about our community.
